You can’t have a healthy smile without healthy gums. The role your gums play in your overall oral health cannot be overstated. Many people don’t understand the importance of taking care of their gums.

At Mark Johnson, DDS, we want to help you attain and maintain great gum health. Each time you visit us for a checkup and cleaning, we will evaluate the health of your gum tissue. If we begin to see signs of trouble, we can help you to prevent a worsening of the condition.

For those who are beginning to develop gum disease, we are ready to treat you with effective periodontal therapy.

What is Gum Disease?

Periodontal disease, or gum disease, is caused by bacterial infection. The human mouth is a host to millions of bacteria. Some of this bacteria is ‘good’ bacteria and aids in digestion.

However, some of the bacteria found in plaque buildup is harmful. If left unchecked, harmful bacteria can lead to gingivitis and periodontitis. Gingivitis is an early form of gum disease, whereas periodontitis is a later form.

If you are not brushing and flossing properly, this plaque can settle along your gum line, and the bacteria begin to excrete toxins. These toxins can negatively affect your gum tissue.

Signs of Gum Disease

If your gum tissue begins to deteriorate, you will notice it. Your gums will turn from pink to a bright red. They may swell and bleed, especially when you brush or floss your teeth.

If your gingivitis advances, it can become periodontitis. The signs that you may have periodontitis include:

  • Bad breath.
  • Receding gums.
  • Gum pockets around your teeth.
  • Pus between teeth.
  • Shifting or loose teeth.

If you do experience a little bit of bleeding when you floss, this means that you need to floss more, not less. Brush your teeth to remove plaque from their surfaces. Floss your teeth to rid them of the plaque that builds up between them.

Our Treatment for Gum Disease

We will screen for gum disease. We can recommend a course of treatment for various stages of gum disease. We know that gum disease can be scary, but there are advanced techniques and treatments we can use to restore health to your gums.

Some of these treatments include root planing, scaling, laser treatments, and antibiotic treatments.
