Tooth loss can impact your life in many ways, from how you speak and eat to the appearance of your smile. At the dental practice of Mark W. Johnson, DDS in Albuquerque, New Mexico, we are committed to helping patients regain the functionality of their teeth and their confidence in their smiles. One of the most popular tooth replacement options chosen by patients is a dental implant. These restorations offer many benefits for patients who have lost anywhere from a single tooth to a full arch of teeth. Getting dental implants placed takes a few steps that occur over the course of several months, but once patients have their final restorations in place, they find that it was well worth the wait!
Step 1: Consultation. The first step is a consultation with the dentist to determine whether dental implants are a good option for your unique needs and preferences.
Step 2: Implant placement. If you decide to move forward with an implant, we can refer you to an oral surgeon who will surgically place the implant in your jawbone. As the implant heals over the course of the next three to six months, it will fuse with the jawbone in a process called osseointegration. This process is what enables dental implants to closely mimic your natural tooth root, providing a strong and stable foundation for your new tooth after the implant has healed.
Step 3: Implant restoration. After the healing process is complete, it is time to begin the restoration process. First, a small incision is placed in the gums to reveal the implant so that a connecting piece called an abutment can be attached to the implant. This is what will ultimately be used to attach your final restoration (such as a dental crown, a bridge, or denture). After a brief healing period that typically lasts one to two weeks, you will come back to the office, and your final restoration will be secured in place.
At the dental practice of Mark W. Johnson, DDS, we love helping patients complete their dental implant – and their smile! – by placing the final restoration. We use high-quality, durable porcelain that looks, feels, and functions like a natural tooth, so no one will ever know you’ve had your tooth replaced. In fact, implants function so well that you might even forget that you’ve had dental work done!
